Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has suggested to The Shields Gazette that Tottenham Hotspur could suffer from fatigue this weekend.
The Black Cats will take on Tottenham away from home at White Hart Lane in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
Spurs were in action on Wednesday evening when they faced AS Monaco at the Wembley Stadium in London in the Champions League.
Defoe, a former Tottenham striker, hopes that Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffer from fatigue this weekend.
“I watched Spurs in the Champions League and they are not at the level they were at the end of last season,” Defoe told The Shields Gazette. “But it is early days. It’s the same with us, though. It’s early days for us.
“Hopefully, because they played in midweek, some fatigue might kick in. I’m at risk of starting to speak like a manager here!”
The defeat to Monaco must have come as a disappointment to Tottenham, who will be keen on returning to winning ways on Sunday evening.
The North London outfit got the better of Stoke City 4-0 away from home at the Bet365 Stadium in the Premier League last weekend.
Sunderland are struggling for points at the moment, and it is hard to see David Moyes’s side pick up even a draw at White Hart Lane.
Defoe has scored two goals in four Premier League matches for the Black Cats so far this season.
The English striker will be a key player for Sunderland this season if they are to avoid relegation to the Championship.
