Jermain Defoe has told Premier League Show 1 to 11 that Hugo Lloris is both incredibly quick and “good with his feet” and “one of the best at head tennis” – picking the Tottenham player as the best goalkeeper he played with.
Defoe featured was asked to pick the best 11 he played alongside throughout his career. He named Lloris ahead of David James, Paul Robinson and Brad Friedel. The likes of Kyle Walker, Gareth Bale and Ledley King also featured.
Lloris remains an ever-present for Tottenham, the club’s captain despite the presence of Harry Kane. The 35-year-old has signed a new deal until 2024 with Spurs, clocking up 414 appearances in his 10 years since joining for £12m.
Defoe was full of praise for the France captain – surprisingly claiming that Lloris is very quick off the line. He also said the left-footed goalkeeper is “good with his feet” and behind the scenes, one of the best at head tennis.
“Hugo was a special goalkeeper. What impresses me the most is how quick he was around the goal, how quick he is off the line. Brilliant goalkeeper. Very vocal, leader, a natural leader. So good with his feet, one of the best at head tennis.”

Lloris might have lost a yard of pace. But the fact he remains Tottenham’s number one after so many years is testament to the player himself. He has had spells in which his form has been questioned, but he is still one of the league’s best.
For a player such as Defoe, who only played with Lloris for a couple of seasons, to name him as the best goalkeeper he played with is a huge compliment. For £12million, he has got to go down as one of Tottenham’s best-ever signings.
