He may divide opinion among West Ham United fans but former striker Jermain Defoe made one young supporter’s day.

Defoe became something of a hate figure for West Ham fans when he handed in a transfer request the day after they were relegated from the Premier League back in 2003.
After failing to get a move before the start of the Hammers’ Championship campaign, Defoe was then sent off on several occasions eventually forcing a move to bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
Tit for tat with the West Ham crowd over the ensuing years since and biting Javier Mascherano in one particular derby did little to change the opinion of the Hammers fans.
Defoe has been heavily linked with a return to East London in recent seasons and even discussed a potential come back in The Express. That never came to fruition.
But as the striker matured he let it be known how much he regretted the way he left West Ham, blaming his agent at the time (Sky Sports).
Well now he has taken another step towards West Ham redemption after making a young Hammer’s day with a brilliant post on Twitter.

West Ham fan going by the name Kris Gonzo on Twitter posted a superb video of his young son scoring a goal for his team.
The video prompted some light-hearted ribbing from fellow fans questioning whether the boy had meant to finish the goal in the manner he had, one fan suggesting it was ‘a bit shinny’.
But ex West Ham striker Defoe was asked ‘Shank or tekkers’ by another supporter and quickly responded.
“From one finisher to another, he definitely meant it,” Defoe said.

The young Hammer’s dad said: “I just told him people are discussing his goal on the internet… Amazing what a difference a few words can make. He can’t wait to tell his football coach now.”
Defoe’s tweet went down well not only with the boy and his dad but West Ham fans in general.
A small but superb gesture from the former England man seems to have healed some old wounds.
With the striker not getting much game time at Bournemouth and West Ham struggling for options up front, could a January reunion be on the cards? Watch this space.
