Jermain Defoe says Anthony Gordon looked ‘really sharp’ during his debut for Newcastle United as Eddie Howe’s side recorded a 1-1 draw against West Ham United, as he told Premier League Productions (04/02/23 at 7:30 pm).
Following his January transfer from Everton, Gordon was brought on for the last 20 minutes at St James’ Park, with the home crowd giving the winger a warm welcome.
Former Premier League hitman Defoe thinks the arrival of Gordon is a ‘good signing’ for the Magpies and he thinks the player in question suits what Howe wants.

Added to Gordon, there is now serious competition starting to build up for those wide areas.
Allan Saint-Maximin has been sidelined for parts of the season and he will want to reclaim a regular starting spot, whilst Miguel Almiron, albeit his form has dipped off lately, has been one of the main men going forward this season.
Then someone like Alexander Isak can play that wide role, as well as Joe Willock, with Defoe being left impressed by the new kid on the block.
“As I said, it’s a good signing,” said Defoe. “I think he will do well there and he will do well with this manager, Eddie Howe.
“He always wants to improve players, even if it’s that 1%. He’s at the right age. But when he came on, he looked really sharp.”

HOW FAR CAN GORDON GO?
The all-action forward only scored three Premier League goals for an Everton side that is still in the Premier League’s relegation zone, despite their 1-0 win over Arsenal on Saturday.
Gordon, just like the now-sacked Frank Lampard and the rest of his Toffees teammates, are to blame for the club’s current situation.
His performances simply weren’t up to scratch, but now there is a big change in environment and he is pushing for Champions League football and the England U21 international will be hoping for change.
Someone like Almiron, and his recent rise, is proof that Gordon can cook for Newcastle during these coming months.
