The Sunderland striker was overlooked by the previous regime.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
Quoted by the Chronicle, Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe says he thinks he will get another England chance now that Sam Allardyce is in charge.
The forward was in sensational form for the Black Cats last season as he managed 18 goals in all competitions, 15 in the Premier League, to effectively single-handedly keep them in the top flight.
There were calls for him to be included in the England squad because of that form, but former manager Roy Hodgson elected not to pick him.
England manager Sam Allardyce during the press conference
Hodson has now been replaced by Allardyce, who managed Defoe at Sunderland last season, and the striker says he now thinks he will be given his chance at an international return.
“I always thought I had a chance (of going to the Euros) if I’m honest,” the Chronicle reports him saying.
“I thought well if I’m scoring goals then maybe, yeah I’ve got a chance of going. But I believe now with Sam in charge that if I’m playing well and scoring goals I think I’ll get a chance.”
Marcus Rashford celebrates after scoring the first goal for England
Unfortunately for Defoe, it is hard to see him being in the England set up in future given the options they now have.
Harry Kane will find his goalscoring boots once again at some point, while Daniel Sturridge is a proven goalscorer, to say the least.
There is also Marcus Rashford to consider, with his star performance for the Under 21s likely to push Defoe even further down the pecking order.
