Jermain Defoe is looking forward to his spell with Glasgow Rangers having moved to Ibrox on an 18-month loan.

Jermain Defoe has admitted to Rangers’ official website that he is expecting working under Steven Gerrard to feel quite strange having played alongside the Gers boss at international level.

Rangers have captured the imagination during the early stages of the January transfer window with the news that they have signed Defoe on loan as they look to end their wait for the Scottish Premiership title.

The 36-year-old is an incredibly exciting signing for the Gers given that he has been prolific at almost every club he has joined during his career, and continues to keep himself in excellent condition.

Of course, Gerrard will know extremely well how effective Defoe could be if he can get the best out of him during the next 18 months. The pair played together for England, and the striker admitted that that previous relationship may make adjusting to his new surroundings ever so slightly more difficult than normal.

“It might be a little bit strange having him as my manager; I had it a little bit with Eddie Howe because I was at loan at Bournemouth when I was really young but only for a few months,” he told the club’s official website.

“With this it will probably be a lot different, my time with England with Stevie was good and we now just have to get on with it, do the best we can and try and build something positive for the team.”

The fact that Gerrard knows Defoe so well arguably makes the deal all the more exciting for the Ibrox faithful. He will have a much better idea of what he can expect from the forward and a much better sense of whether he will be a success or not.

And there is no question that if Defoe lives up to expectations, Celtic are going to need a remarkable second-half of the season to stop Rangers from coming out on top in the title race.
