Out-of-favour Arsenal star Shkodran Mustafi has been suggested as a potential shock transfer target for Liverpool.
The Reds’ crisis of centre-back options went from bad to worse last night.
Joel Matip is confirmed to have suffered ankle ligament damage in Liverpool’s win away to Spurs last night, while Fabinho, the midfielder who’s been their best central defender this season, missed the game through injury.
With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the long term, this is a desperate situation for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were linked with Sokratis prior to him leaving Arsenal a little earlier this month.
But Jermaine Jenas, speaking live on BT Sport, has suggested that Klopp should take a look at another struggling Gunners player in the form of Mustafi.
He said: “Let’s just say that stopgap was Sokratis who came in, or Mustafi,” said Jenas. “A centre-half out there who’s not getting a game. Are Liverpool fans going to be happy about it?”
Is he available?
In a word, yes.
Mustafi, who cost Arsenal £35 million in 2016, is out of contract at the Emirates Stadium this summer and hasn’t even been making Mikel Arteta’s squad in recent weeks.
The Spaniard simply has much better options and therefore if an offer – any offer – came in for the Germany World Cup winner, the North Londoners would probably take it.
