Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas has told Yahoo Sport that he does not believe the time is right for Mauricio Pochettino to leave for Real Madrid – but reckons he could move in a couple of years.

The Argentine manager has been linked with a move to the vacant managerial hotseat at the Santiago Bernabeu after Zinedine Zidane called time on his reign as Real boss, following three successive Champions League triumphs.

It has seen Pochettino’s name touted as a possible successor, along with Maurizio Sarri, Massimiliano Allegri, Arsene Wenger and Antonio Conte.

But Jenas believes that it is too soon for Pochettino to join Real, but reckons he could move to the Spanish giants in the next couple of years if Spurs fail to win a trophy.

“The Real Madrid job is always likely to be the one that takes Mauricio away from Spurs, but I’m not sure this is the right moment for him,” says Jenas. “There is no rush. He has the ability to go on and achieve something historic with this Tottenham side and that must appeal to him.

“Two or three years down the line, he might feel as if there is nowhere else for him to go with Tottenham and then he can look to go to Real Madrid or the other big clubs and have a real go at winning the Champions League and major trophies.”

Pochettino recently signed a new contract at Spurs, which should keep him in north London until the summer of 2023.

The former Southampton and Espanyol manager has failed to win a trophy since moving to White Hart Lane back in 2014, which continues to hang over the Spurs side despite recent successes.

Spurs will look to end their trophy hoodoo next season, as they fight on four fronts once again in the Premier League, League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League.
