Newcastle United have been hit with a number of big injuries in recent weeks across the pitch.

Yet, when you look at the form, performances and results of Eddie Howe’s side in recent times, then you wouldn’t think that so many senior stars are in the treatment room.

That’s a credit to Eddie Howe himself, but also to the Newcastle United players who have been handed chances they previously wouldn’t have been given.

One of them includes rising superstar Lewis Miley, who left Jeff Stelling making an ‘absolutely bonkers’ claim and that’s whether he can make the England squad for Euro 2024, as he told talkSPORT.

Ally McCoist responded to that suggestion and stated that he can’t see it, but he did add that he has been left amazed by the ‘game knowledge’ the 17-year-old is showcasing for his age.

Lewis Miley started against PSG in the Champions League recently and he put in a very good performance, as well as the last three Premier League games, including back-to-back wins against Chelsea and Manchester United.

Usually, those minutes wouldn’t have come about, but the quick-thinking midfielder is making use of it.

Lewis Miley for England?

“I just want to quickly ask you about one player,” said Stelling to Ally McCoist. “He’s 17. Lewis Miley. He has been absolutely amazing.

“Now, this sounds absolutely bonkers, but if he carries on the way he is now. Could he somehow get on that plane? (For England for Euro 2024).”

McCoist responded: “Oh, crikey! No. Phww, yes. That would be THE story, if he could force his way into that squad.

“But I would have to say no, at this moment in time. I was talking to Eddie Howe after the game (against PSG) and I can’t believe, clearly he is a talented player, but I can’t believe his game knowledge – just his general awareness of how to play the game at 17, I find remarkable.”

Newcastle United’s academy

For many, many years, mainly under the ownership of Mike Ashley, Newcastle weren’t pushed or used to its fullest.

It left a grim mood across the place, and resulted in many troubling moments, including two relegations.

One area that seemed to just produce next to nothing was the club’s academy. It had no life. No superstars were coming through.

But fast forward to the present and now the light is there. Sean Longstaff is a key member of the midfield, Lewis Miley is getting rave reviews and Elliot Anderson is another one coming through.

All in all, it’s a good sign for Newcastle that they are progressing all over the shop.
