Millwall signed Jed Wallace on a permanent basis from Wolverhampton Wanderers after an impressive loan spell in 2016/17.
A lot has changed at Wolves since Jed Wallace left for Millwall on a permanent basis in the summer. The Midland giants have gone from mid-table under Paul Lambert to top of the tree under Nuno Espirito Santo, playing some of the league’s most thrilling football along the way.
A part of Wallace may be wishing he had stayed on board a Wolves side seemingly clutching a one-way ticket to the Premier League – especially with Millwall struggling in 19th and just five points above the relegation zone.
Yet, if the former Portsmouth winger could not force his way into Wolves’ plans last season, instead spending the second half of the campaign helping Millwall win promotion from League One via the play-offs, the 23-year-old would be living in the clouds if he thought that he would be anything more than a quality back-up option at Molineux these days.
After all, no club in the Championship can claim to have as many quality options out wide as Nuno Espirito Santo’s league leaders. Helder Costa was arguably the league’s standout wideman in 2016/17 and while he has not hit top form so far this season, Diogo Jota (below) and Ivan Cavaleiro most certainly have.
The Portuguese pair have nine goals and seven assists between them so far since compatriot Nuno took over in the Midlands.
Meanwhile, with the former Porto boss switching to a back three and getting the best out of the attacking presence of full-backs Barry Douglas and Matt Doherty, it appears that Wallace may have been simply left in the limbo.
Millwall may not be playing Premier League football any time soon but at least Wallace isn’t stuck on the bench.
