Jed Steer and Antonio Luna reacted with delight on Twitter as Aston Villa booked their place in the play-off final after beating West Brom on penalties at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Goalkeeper Steer was the hero on the night because he saved two spot-kicks before Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham scored the decisive penalty to send his team through to a Wembley final.

Villa went into that encounter with a one-goal advantage, but Albion cancelled that out when Craig Dawson headed in from a long throw in the first half.

The away team dominated possession, but they struggled to break down a rock solid Albion defence before Chris Brunt’s sending off saw the home side drop deeper as the game went into extra time.

Sam Johnstone produced a number of high quality saves to ensure the game went to penalties where Steer saved the first two spot-kicks which helped his team book a second trip to Wembley.

After the match, the penalty hero Steer sent this message from his personal Twitter account:

And former Villa left-back Luna also wished Dean Smith’s side good luck in the final as he posted this message on his personal Twitter account.

Villa were beaten by Fulham in the play-off final last May and those who played on that day will want to eradicate those nightmares and turn them into dreams.

If Smith does guide Villa into the Premier League then it will be a remarkable job by the boyhood fan considering he only walked through the doors in November.
