The January transfer window is rapidly approaching and it is clear that West Ham’s squad is in need of rejuvenation.

Manager David Moyes will be beginning to consider which players he will make approaches for, as he aims to preserve West Ham’s Premier League status.

Central midfield is certainly an area in which West Ham would benefit from a new arrival, with Mark Noble having been disappointing so far this season, while Pedro Obiang also hasn’t been especially effective.

One player that Moyes could well contemplate bringing in is James McCarthy, with the Everton midfielder closing in on a return to action after enduring much misfortune with injuries over the past couple of seasons.

McCarthy has yet to play for Everton in the Premier League this season, and only made twelve appearances in the top flight last campaign – but when fit is capable of making a major impact in central midfield.

Possessing an impressive passing range and a tendency to burst into the opposing penalty area, McCarthy is certainly a useful player when at his sharpest. In addition the Republic of Ireland international is able to provide his side with additional bite in midfield and frequently makes well-timed challenges.

If Moyes was to pursue a move for McCarthy it would be something of a risk given the latter’s injury record but it could be a chance worth taking due to the quality that he possesses.
