It has been a challenging season so far for Everton, with the club having suffered several disappointing results, but there is now hope that they have turned a corner.
David Unsworth’s temporary spell in charge ended with a 4-0 victory over West Ham United and Saturday afternoon the Sam Allardyce era will get underway when Everton host Huddersfield Town.
Allardyce will certainly want to get off to a good start, and if history is anything to go by then he has a good chance of doing just that, with no permanent Everton manager having lost their first Premier League game in charge.
There have been seven previous Everton managers in the Premier League era, with Mike Walker, Joe Royle, Howard Kendall, Walter Smith, David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and Ronald Koeman having all avoided defeat in their first top flight fixture.
Allardyce has much work to do in order to get Everton performing consistently and cohesively, but the display that they produced against West Ham should certainly be used as a blueprint to kick on and secure a top 10 finish.
Having established a reputation as a manager who specialises in saving teams from relegation, Allardyce will surely achieve that feat with Everton with such a talented group of players.
