Nottingham Forest must put run together to keep play-off hopes alive

The next month could be crucial for Nottingham Forest in their quest for promotion.

Although they are currently only eight points adrift of the play-off places, Nottingham Forest must be fully aware that they need to start performing with greater consistency if they are to keep their hopes of promotion alive.

Forest are in 13th place in the table and, while they are capable of producing excellent performances at times, they remain vulnerable defensively, as demonstrated by the fact that they have conceded 33 goals in the Championship this season.

Having lost three of their last four league games, it is now time for Mark Warburton’s team to start putting a run together and gaining some momentum.

Tomorrow Forest host Bolton Wanderers, who are in danger of relegation, and that game represents an excellent opportunity for Warburton’s side to take all three points.

Next up is an away game against Bristol City. Although this fixture – against a side that is challenging for promotion, will be a difficult game – a point would represent a good result for Forest.

Forest then face Preston North End away and Sheffield Wednesday at home, with both sides close to them in the table and competing for a possible play-off slot.

The final game of 2017 for Forest is at home to Sunderland and Warburton’s side will be determined to prevail in that fixture given the current struggles that the Black Cats are enduring.

These are the kind of games Nottingham Forest need to win in order to put a run together to move up the table. It’s still early doors in the Championship, and any number of mid-table teams could emerge from the pack and claim a play-off place. But Nottingham Forest need to start building momentum now.

On New Year’s Day Forest travel to face Leeds United in what will be a challenging game, but hopefully Warburton’s side could go into that fixture full of confidence off the back of a good run.

If they are unable to perform consistently over the next month then Forest’s hopes of earning promotion via the play-offs will effectively be over. There are, however, some good opportunities for them to pick up points in their upcoming games.
