Versatile Everton defender Mason Holgate has gained valuable experience this season.
Everton defender Mason Holgate has revealed that he is happy to play in any position for the club.
Although he has often been used as a right-back for Everton, Holgate had a spell as a centre-back earlier in the campaign and stressed that the experience was hugely beneficial for him.
Holgate told the club’s official website: “I think it is good for me to experience playing in different positions. I am happy to play anywhere, as long as I am playing, and it helps me develop my understanding of the game.
“Whichever position I end up in, this experience will help me a lot, because I am seeing what is expected from the other players on the pitch.”
Holgate also featured as a right wing-back under former manager Ronald Koeman, and will hope that he will soon be able to re-establish himself as an important player for Everton in the Premier League having not played in any of the club’s last four top flight fixtures.
The 21-year-old has, however, played a major part for Everton in the Europa League and should be involved when the Toffees, who have already been eliminated from the competition, host Atalanta Wednesday night.
Holgate will have to be patient for further opportunities to impress in the Premier League, but in the long-term at Everton he will hope to get more chances when the club finally appoint a permanent successor to Koeman.
An England U21 international, Holgate will have designs on eventually representing the Three Lions at senior level and will undoubtedly be encouraged by the chances that Gareth Southgate has given to young players recently.
