Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has been named the club’s player of the month for October.

Lascelles, who also claimed the September edition of the award, produced some excellent displays last month as Newcastle won two and drew two of their four games.

As reported by the club’s official website, Lascelles received 45 per cent of the vote as he finished above Jonjo Shelvey and Florian Lejeune.

Despite being just 24 years old, Lascelles has the aura of an extremely experienced performer, with the centre-back possessing excellent leadership skills.

Lascelles is strong aerially and also comfortable with the ball at his feet, while he was sorely missed as an ankle problem prevented him from featuring in the 4-1 loss to Manchester United at the weekend.

Newcastle will hope that Lascelles will be fit to feature in next weekend’s Premier League game at home to Watford.

Should Lascelles continue to produce such impressive performances then it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that he could force his way into the England squad for next summer’s World Cup in Russia, especially with manager Gareth Southgate now deploying a three-man defence.

For now, though, Lascelles will be fully focused on domestic matters with Newcastle, who are aiming to bounce back having lost three Premier League games in a row.
