Tottenham have significantly improved their squad depth.
Last season, as they crashed out of the Champions League in the group stages, one of the biggest concerns surrounding Tottenham Hotspur was their lack of squad depth.
Mauricio Pochettino had assembled an excellent starting line-up, but Tottenham’s resources beyond that were rather limited, which was made painfully clear when they fielded heavily-rotated sides in some group games.
Now, however, that issue appears to have been addressed somewhat, with Pochettino being able to call upon some talented players who can supplement his first-team squad.
Centre-back Juan Foyth, for instance, produced a composed performance against APOEL Nicosia in the Champions League this week and is worthy of more game time, while Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Fernando Llorente – two players who have received criticism for their performances this season – were also effective against the Cypriot side as they managed to get on the scoresheet.
Erik Lamela didn’t feature against APOEL as he wasn’t included in Tottenham’s squad for the group stages, but he will be eligible for the knockout rounds and will add further depth for Pochettino’s side.
In addition, Serge Aurier is starting to settle after a rather chaotic start to his Tottenham career, and Moussa Sissoko has also shown some significant signs of improvement.
Tottenham certainly need to improve their league form having gone four games without a win, but with the players he can now call upon, Pochettino will surely be able to inspire an upturn in fortunes soon.
It appears that Tottenham now have the requisite strength in depth to compete in several competitions and that should help them greatly when the Champions League knockout stages get underway. Pochettino will have some useful options to call upon from the bench that could have a major impact late on in games.
