The young Tottenham defender impressed against APOEL.
Juan Foyth has been used sparingly since his summer switch from Estudiantes but, with Tottenham’s progression to the Last 16 stage as group winners already secure, the talented young centre-back was given an opportunity to impress against APOEL Nicosia last night.
Foyth certainly seized his opportunity in the 3-0 victory at Wembley as he produced a composed display, to the extent that manager Mauricio Pochettino must now be seriously considering using the 19-year-old in Premier League games.
Tottenham’s central-defensive options are rather depleted at present, with Davinson Sanchez suspended and Toby Alderweireld still out injured.
Pochettino has the option of drafting Eric Dier back into defence but on last night’s evidence he should take a risk and give Foyth his chance.
Composed in possession and capable of making precisely-timed interceptions with regularity, Foyth is an excellent prospect and appears unfazed under pressure.
Coping with the intensity of the Premier League is another matter entirely but Foyth should be able to cope, even against high-profile opponents.
Maybe Saturday’s game at home to a Stoke City side containing the aerial threat of Peter Crouch isn’t the best game to throw Foyth in to, but he should get an opportunity in the subsequent fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Perhaps Foyth isn’t quite ready to be a regular for Tottenham, but he certainly deserves at least an opportunity to demonstrate that he can make an impact in the Premier League.
