Jaylen Brown is not leaving the Boston Celtics, but he had fun imagining the kind of check that could make China sound tempting.
The Celtics star turned a familiar NBA internet joke into a viral moment during his trip to China, leaning into the “get ready to learn Mandarin” meme instead of dodging it.
It was clearly playful, but the number still grabbed attention.

Jaylen Brown jokes about Shanghai Sharks move during China trip
A Fullcourtpass post shared Brown’s viral comments about playing in China, with the clip circulating as fans asked how dominant he would be in the CBA.
Brown said: “How many points would I average with the Shanghai Sharks? Listen, y’all cut the check. Shanghai, I’m outta here. You write a check for $100 million, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Wing Chun, I’d play for all the teams at the same time.”
He continued: “I’d be the first player to play for every team at the same time. I’d be seen on Twitter. Get ready to learn Mandarin, buddy. We out here learning the Mandarin for real. Beautiful language.”
The Shanghai Sharks have become shorthand online for NBA players being told their league future is fading. Brown flipped it, making himself the star attraction rather than the punchline.
Jaylen Brown’s Celtics contract makes China talk pure comedy
There is no serious sign Brown is leaving Boston.
He is under contract with the Celtics through the 2028-29 season after signing a five-year, $303.7 million supermax extension in 2023, which was the richest total NBA deal ever at the time.
His 2025-26 salary is more than $56 million, with future annual salaries rising beyond $60 million before the deal ends. His estimated net worth is around $80 million, driven by NBA earnings, endorsements, business interests and his 741 brand work.
Brown remains one of Boston’s franchise pillars, an All-Star wing, 2024 Finals MVP and a major two-way presence next to Jayson Tatum.
That is why the China comment worked. It was not a transfer hint. It was Brown laughing with fans, acknowledging his value and showing comfort in a market where NBA stars still carry huge pull.
For now, Mandarin can stay on the travel itinerary. Boston still has the contract.
