Burnley need new players in the Europa League, but they need to shift a few bodies, too – including Nahki Wells.
Burnley look to have all but secured seventh place in the Premier League and a Europa League berth for next season.
And so attention will quickly turn to summer recruitment, as Sean Dyche looks at which players he can bring in to boost a squad that looks ill-suited for the additional midweek fixtures.
According to the Daily Mail, former Clarets man Jay Rodriguez is one such target who could sign from West Bromwich Albion as they face relegation.
Given his form in 2018 and connection to Burnley, a move for the England international would look to be a solid transfer for Dyche.
But such a deal could well spell the end of another Clarets player’s career, despite the need to boost the size of the squad.
Nahki Wells has failed to make any sort of impact at Turf Moor since arriving from Huddersfield Town at the start of the season.
Almost every Burnley player has had a part to play in their run to the European places in the Premier League, but that can not be said of Wells who, following injury problems early in the campaign, has been on the fringes throughout.
Given Chris Wood also arrived last year, the signing of Wells – who was ordinary in the Championship – looked a little odd and so it has proved.
Rodriguez represents a serious upgrade and Dyche should take any opportunity to move Wells on this year – presumably back to the Championship.
Burnley may not be increasing the size of their squad with such a move, but quality will be needed as much as quantity next year.
