Javier Hernandez has told West Ham United’s official website that if his side can get a clean break with injuries then they can challenge for Europe next season.

West Ham had set their eyes on a top seven place this time around, but they have disappointed.

The Hammers started the campaign poorly under Slaven Bilic, and they have been unable to fully recover.

Although David Moyes has sparked an improvement, West Ham are far closer to relegation than the top seven.

And Hernandez believes that the London side’s struggles with injury this season have cost them.

“At the beginning of the season, we were aiming to qualify for European competition, but now we are fighting against relegation, but that is sport, that is football and part of life, so we need to accept it and try to be better and get out and see what’s going to happen next year,” Hernandez said.

“If we have all these players recovered, probably next year we are going to be fighting for a European position, you never know.”

West Ham have indeed been harshly treated with injuries this campaign, with key players picking up knocks at ill-opportune times.

The likes of Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll and Marko Arnautovic have all missed chunks of the campaign with fitness issues.

West Ham are currently in 12th place in the Premier League table, and sit just three points above the drop zone.
