West Ham United have been incredibly inconsistent this season.

West Ham ace Javier Hernandez spoke exclusively to the club’s official website about his side’s struggles against the so-called lesser sides this season, and provided one simple reason why they have dropped points against those below them in the table of late.

The Hammers currently sit in ninth spot in the Premier League table, five points adrift of seventh placed Wolverhampton Wanderers, but defeats to Cardiff, Bournemouth, Burnley and Watford over the past couple of months have really dented their hopes of a top seven finish.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side seem to be motivated for the games against the big clubs, but they struggle to get pumped up for the games against those in and around them in the table.

And Hernandez, 30, explained how that is something that West Ham quite simply must change.

The Mexican spoke exclusively to the club’s official website, and highlighted how the mindset needs to change at the London Stadium, if they are to go on and become a truly elite club:

“You don’t need to think that if you are playing against teams who are fighting relegation that it will be a bit easier or that, if you’re playing against a top club you have nothing to lose. Those are the sort of traps you need to avoid and when you are a big club you don’t get involved with. That mindset needs to change in this club and we need to do that between now and the end of the season and, if we can do that, we can still get seventh position.”

West Ham welcome Huddersfield Town to the London Stadium at the weekend, and nothing less than a win will do for Pellegrini’s men, if they are to have any chance of securing Europa League football for next season.
