The Celtic coach is a key part of Neil Lennon’s backroom staff.
McAteer played alongside some big characters and big names in his career, some of whom have gone on to subsequently manage teams, like Roy Keane and Steven Gerrard.
Duff is getting his first taste of coaching at senior level right now and the former Liverpool star reckons that the 40-year-old has the right stuff to succeed in the role long-term.
As quoted by The Evening Times, McAteer said: “He’s been promoted really quickly – but I don’t think there’s any harm in that. He has been thrown in at the deep end but he’s got the temperament and mentality to thrive.
“He was always quiet, never lost his temper when he was playing. Very likeable and knowledgeable, as well.
“If you had asked me back then if I thought he would go into coaching, probably not. But, then again, I didn’t think Steven Gerrard would either.”
Also suggesting that Duff’s long-term support of the club will be a big factor in his contribution to the Hoops, McAteer clearly feels that the former winger has the passion to succeed in Glasgow.
A different but successful blend for Lennon
The Celtic boss in the past has primarily worked with teammates from his playing career, whether at the Hoops, Bolton or Hibernian.
When he returned for his second spell at Celtic Park though, the coaching staff appeared to be foisted on him by the hierarchy at the Hoops.
Clearly though he’s enjoying working with both Duff and John Kennedy.
Back in August, Lennon hailed the impact of Duff on attacking youngsters such as Mikey Johnston (The Scottish Sun), feeling he was getting the best out of the 20-year-old and pushing his game on to new heights.
Duff was once an elite Premier League player so having that kind of history on hand, as well as a support for the club, is excellent for the Hoops.
