Jason McAteer has revealed that he would love former club Liverpool to go and sign Jadon Sancho – even at the expense of Kylian Mbappe.

It seems a long time ago now but Sancho was regularly linked with a move to Anfield for a couple of years.

The Borussia Dortmund winger remains one of the most exciting young talents in European football but speculation about a move to Liverpool has died down, it would seem.

In contrast, there has been tentative rumours about the Premier League champions breaking the bank to sign Paris Saint-Germain sensation Mbappe over the past six months or so.

According to Duncan Castles, Mbappe would seriously consider a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And although former Liverpool midfielder McAteer has acknowledged Mbappe’s class, he feels that signing the former Manchester City prospect would suit Klopp better in terms of versatility.

He told Goal.com: “You’ll think I’ll say if I can sign any player, I’d sign Mbappe? But I’d sign Jadon Sancho. I’d sign him because he’s got that versatility. I think he can play different positions: he can play left, or right, or down the centre if you wanted.

“He’s got pace and he’s got creativity. If there’s a low block and you need something a little bit different, he offers that. He’s also young and he fits into the mould of this Liverpool team. That’s the player I’d go out and buy.”

Let’s be honest, Liverpool won’t be signing either Mbappe or Sancho.

If they break the bank on anybody this summer, it’ll be on a central defender in light of the injury crisis Klopp’s had to contend with this season.

Fans of the Merseyside club would absolutely love one of Sancho or the Frenchman, but neither is going to materialise.
