Jason McAteer has spoken highly of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to Racing Post.

The former Liverpool midfielder has been impressed with the progress that Alexander-Arnold has made in recent years.

The 20-year-old right-back has established himself as one of the regulars in manager Jurgen Klopp’s side.

McAteer has raved about the England international, and the former Liverpool man has pointed out that the youngster got his chance due to injury suffered by Nathaniel Clyne.

McAteer wrote in Racing Post: “Trent was a centre midfielder who wanted to play centre-half and ended up on the right of defence. Nathaniel Clyne got injured and Trent got thrown in at the deep end and started swimming.

“Clyne couldn’t get back in and Trent has now won the Champions League and is probably England’s regular right-back and playing every game for Liverpool. And he’s still only 21.

“You need that little bit of luck to get in the first team and then show you can handle the pressure and I’m convinced a few of them will be able to do that.”

Promising talent

Alexander-Arnold is one of the best and most promising young right-backs in Europe, and the Englishman can only get better in the coming years.

The right-back is very good going on the attack, and while the Englishman needs to improve defensively, given that he is only 20 years of age, he has time on his hands.

Liverpool are aiming to win the Premier League title this season, as well as clinch the Champions League for the second year in a row.
