Jason Holt suggests his Rangers career may not be over after loan exit

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Jason Holt has left Ibrox on a season-long loan deal after conversations with Steven Gerrard.

Jason Holt has told MailSport that he is not giving up on resurrecting his Rangers career once he returns to Ibrox at the end of the season, and suggested that it was his decision to leave the Gers on loan.

Holt is one of a number of players within Gerrard’s squad who has been offloaded since the Englishman arrived in the Scottish Premiership, with the midfielder joining Fleetwood Town on loan for the coming campaign.

With so much depth in Rangers’ midfield right now, it would appear that the 25-year-old may have a huge uphill battle trying to force his way back into Gerrard’s plans. But Holt is not giving up on earning a fresh start with the Gers, while he also provided an insight into the conversations with Gerrard that led to his loan exit.

“A day or two before I reported back for pre-season at Rangers, I spoke to the new gaffer. We had a face-to-face chat and I was aware he was going to strengthen the squad,” he told MailSport. “I had to find out if I was going to be a part of it. He told me that I probably wouldn’t play as regularly as I wanted.

“So I think it was the right decision to join a club where I’m going to have a big role. Gerrard didn’t shove me out of the door. But it was a decision I felt I just had to make. I’ll look back on my time at Rangers and know I never let anyone down.

“I always gave my all every time I played even though it was a difficult time for the club. I think the fans appreciated that. But my Rangers career isn’t over yet. I’ve still time on my contract – and no one knows what the future might hold for me.”

Holt has impressed for the League One side in pre-season and he will be hoping that he can take that form into the new season. The door may be open slightly right now, but an underwhelming year at Highbury would surely do little for his prospects of turning his Rangers career around.

And with MailSport reporting that he will have one year left on his contract when he returns next summer, he may feel under a little more pressure to succeed with Fleetwood as Rangers may prefer to sell if he does not find himself prominently in their plans upon his return.

But Holt seems determined to prove during the coming year that writing him off returning to the Ibrox fold at some stage in the future would be premature.
