Holt left Rangers on a season-long loan to join Fleetwood Town earlier this summer.

On-loan Rangers midfielder Jason Holt has admitted to Fleetwood Town’s official website that current Light Blues boss Steven Gerrard is his idol, alongside Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Rangers appointed Liverpool legend Gerrard after deciding to axe Graeme Murty from his role as Gers boss, which saw Holt looking to play under his childhood idol.

However, Gerrard’s hectic transfer business has seen the Gers bring in Scott Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly in the middle of the park – leaving no room for 25-year-old Holt.

It has since seen former Gers midfielder Joey Barton lure Holt to League One Fleetwood after playing alongside him during Barton’s short Rangers spell between 2016-17. But Holt admitted that Gerrard is his idol, despite being sent on loan.

“I had a few childhood heroes,” Holt said. “The manager at Rangers now, Steven Gerrard, is one that I looked up to. Frank Lampard as well, they were always similar players to what I wanted to be.

“Getting in the box and scoring goals, I’ve always been a midfielder though. So, like I said, those two are the people I looked up to and try to model my game on.”

Former Hearts and Scotland youth international Holt still has a chance to play under Gerrard, with two years remaining on his contract at Ibrox.

A successful loan spell could see the box-to-box midfielder earn his place back in Gerrard’s squad fulfil a lifelong dream to work alongside the former England and Liverpool skipper.
