Rangers are set to release a number of players this summer. Goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is the biggest name of the lot, with some forgotten names in there too.

Jak Alnwick and Jordan Rossiter will join Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan in leaving Ibrox. Their contracts end this summer, and won’t be renewed.

The same goes for midfielder Jason Holt. The 27-year-old won’t have his deal extended, and will leave Rangers five years after arriving.

Holt joined Rangers from Hearts in 2015, as Mark Warburton brought him to Ibrox. With 12 goals in his first season, Holt made a big impact.

Gradually, he has been phased out of the Rangers side. When Steven Gerrard came in as Rangers boss, Holt was loaned out to Fleetwood Town and then St Johnstone, up until his contract expiration.

Now, The Scottish Sun claim that QPR want to sign Holt on a free transfer. Warburton is now in charge there, and Holt could reunite with Lee Wallace.

Other clubs are thought to be keen, and whilst Holt has been discussing his situation, he has also spoken about his very honest conversation with Gerrard two years ago.

Holt note that the first thing he did when Gerrard was appointed was to go and speak to him about his future.

When Gerrard couldn’t promise him playing time, Holt decided to leave Rangers even though he wanted it to ‘go on for ever’.

“You never want to leave a club like Rangers but you have conversations with managers and there comes a time when you need a move for the benefit of your career,” said Holt. “But it’s always a difficult decision. Ask any player that has been at a big club, you want it to go on for ever but the reality is it’s not going to. There comes a time when you think you need to further your playing career and that was the case for me.”

“When he (Gerrard) got the job, the first thing I did was speak to him to find out where I stood in his plans. I was aware he was going to bring in new players, he was fair with me and said he can’t guarantee me the games I’d had in the past. As a player you have a decision to make whether you want to be a bit part player or play every week, and I wanted to play every week,” he added.
