Jason Holt admits he’s accepted his Rangers career is over

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Jason Holt is set to remain on the Ibrox club’s books for another year.

In comments reported by the Evening Times, Jason Holt has admitted that he has accepted that his Rangers career is over after completing a loan move that is set to run until the end of his contract at Ibrox.

Holt’s days at Rangers have arguably looked to be numbered since Steven Gerrard arrived at the club last summer. Having struggled to stamp his authority on a spot in the side since their promotion to the Scottish Premiership, Holt was loaned out to Fleetwood Town ahead of last season.

His time in League One did not appear to do much for his situation. The 26-year-old was overshadowed by Greg Docherty, who was playing in the same division after also being loaned out by the Gers.

It would have come as no surprise to the Gers supporters therefore, that Holt was on the move during the most recent window with St Johnstone taking the midfielder on loan for the campaign. With Transfermarkt showing that his Rangers contract expires next summer, it appears that the loan means that he has already played his final game for the Gers.

And Holt is clearly aware that he is all but out the Ibrox door as he explained the difficulty of coming to terms with the prospect of leaving Rangers.

“It’s a wrench to leave Rangers, of course it is,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times. “It’s a big club, a special club but in football you have to think about your career and move on sometimes.”

“I had a great time at Rangers. I had a great relationship with the fans there. The first couple of years were great. I like to think I made a contribution there when I played and I’ll look back fondly on it. But it was time to move on,” he went on to add.

While Holt did not always escape criticism from the supporters, and there do not appear to be many suggesting that Gerrard has made a mistake with the former Hearts man, he has been a good servant for the Gers, making well over 100 appearances for the side in all competitions.

Nevertheless, as Holt suggests, it does appear to be right time to part ways, with Rangers looking to step up and the midfielder keen to play regularly ahead of what should be the peak years of his career.
