Celtic tied up one deal on deadline day by snapping up forward Odsonne Edouard on loan from Paris Saint-Germain – but they also missed out on a deal for Jason Denayer.
The Bhoys had hoped to make additions to their squad on the final day of the summer transfer window ahead of the Champions League group stage, but could only bring in Edouard to boost their attack.
Brendan Rodgers had also hoped to bring in another defender, given that he only has Jozo Simunovic, Erik Sviatchenko and Dedryck Boyata at his disposal, and all three have suffered some injury issues this season.
On deadline day, Celtic did attempt to re-sign Manchester City defender Jason Denayer on loan, but The Mirror reported that Denayer snubbed a move back to Celtic on deadline day in favour of heading to Galatasaray.
Denayer, 22, spent the 2014-15 season on loan with Celtic, scoring six goals in 44 games, before heading back to Manchester City and then being farmed out on loan to Galatasaray and Sunderland.
Now back with Galatasaray, Denayer’s decision left Celtic a little short at centre back, and his choice to snub a return to the Bhoys left many perplexed.
So far, Denayer’s choice has not paid dividends, as he has yet to start a single game for the Turkish side, making just four substitute appearances to a total of 36 minutes – and average of just nine minutes per appearance.
Whereas Denayer would have played regularly under Rodgers, he’s now simply sat on the Galatasaray bench, and may well feel some regret that he turned down Champions League football with Celtic.
