Tony Finau has admitted he’s having the worst season of his PGA Tour career, and his form has been on a steady decline for some time now.

Back in 2019, Tony Finau was competing for a Green Jacket alongside Tiger Woods at Augusta National, where Woods predicted Finau would eventually win a major. Since then, he’s won six times on the PGA Tour and even played for Team USA in the Ryder Cup.

But since then, Finau has fallen down the rankings. He is currently 89th in the Official World Golf Ranking, just behind Chun-an Yu. He didn’t play in any majors in 2025, missed five cuts on tour and managed only one top-10 finish all season.

Jason Day knows plenty about what it takes to try and regain form. Once compared to Tiger Woods during his time as world number one back in 2016, Day has seen plenty of highs and lows throughout his career. When Finau opened up about his struggles, Day had some important advice for him.

Finau, currently competing alongside Day at the Grant Thornton Invitational, spoke candidly about his 2025 struggles during an appearance on The Lads, a YouTube channel he co-hosts.

“It was my worst season of my PGA Tour career, but you can always learn. That’s the great thing,” Finau said.

“I know I didn’t play my best, but it’s like, okay, what do I got to do to be better, to play better?

“I obviously was dealing with a knee, as I had knee surgery this time last year. And then you know I had ankle issues. But even outside of that it’s like what are what are some areas you can get better?

“So it was not the season I anticipated but it also helps you reflect and just say ‘okay when I was playing better how can I adapt to that but even be a better version of that?’ You know what I mean?

Day responded by offering some perspective gained from his own career ups and downs. He pointed out that only the very elite manage a straight path to the top.

Day added: “It’s so hard to have [a straight] trajectory, you know what I mean? There has to be a little bit of [ups and downs], but as long as over time it’ll just slowly go up [it will work].

“It’s hard to be like a Scottie or a Rory where you just rocket.

Finau’s key areas for improvement: Off-the-tee and putting woes

The 2025 season revealed two critical areas where Finau needs to focus his efforts for 2026: his performance off the tee and his putting. Once a strength, Finau’s driving game faltered in 2025, where he lost strokes to the field. Improving accuracy off the tee and hitting more fairways will be crucial to his success.

Additionally, his struggles on the greens, which have plagued him for years, continued in 2025, marking the third consecutive season of losing strokes on putting. Addressing these issues will be essential if Finau hopes to return to his winning ways next season.
