Jason Cundy has laid into Virgil van Dijk following Liverpool’s 2-1 League Cup semi-final first-leg win over Fulham on Wednesday night.
Once again, Liverpool did it the hard way. Coming from behind to win a game of football this season.
The reason why Jurgen Klopp’s side were behind was because of a Virgil van Dijk mistake that allowed Willian to dance through his opponents inside the penalty area and cooly open the scoring.
Jason Cundy thinks Liverpool’s star centre-back has a habit of these ‘rubbish’ moments and that’s why he doesn’t rate him alongside some of the best such as Sol Campbell, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, as he told talkSPORT.
But the former Chelsea man took it one step further by calling Virgil van Dijk ‘overrated’.
Not many will doubt, with Liverpool sitting top of the Premier League table this season, that their ice-cool Dutchman is back to his best this season.
But he did make an error yesterday, whether it’s worthy of verbally battering him like Jason Cundy has done is another story.
Is Virgil van Dijk overrated?
“He can do this van Dijk,” said Cundy. “Sometimes he puts in displays where you go ‘that’s a bit rubbish’.
“Not only does he head the ball in a direction that you don’t want him to. Personally, I think he is overrated.
“I don’t think he is anywhere near the levels, consistently, of the likes of Sol Campbell, John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. I don’t think he is anywhere near that, personally.
“He’s had two good seasons. I know people will go on about the injury he picked up against Everton during COVID. It was a terrible injury. There’s no doubt he is top-class. But I don’t think he’s in that all-time Premier League XI. He is nowhere near it.”
Liverpool take Fulham advantage
Many would have seen Chelsea’s 1-0 first-leg defeat to Championship side, Middelsbrough on Tuesday night.
There has already been an upset and Liverpool fans made sure they didn’t make themselves part of it, as avoiding defeat at Craven Cottage will send them to Wembley.
In the past, Liverpool have showcased their worth and won these big finals.
You assume that if it’s Boro in the final with them, then they will be clear favourites to add yet another trophy to their cabinet under Klopp.
