Telegraph journalist Jason Burt has told the Kelly & Wrighty Show that he has received messages from a couple of sources suggesting that Everton could decide to sack Frank Lampard before the end of the season.

Everton suffered perhaps their biggest defeat of the season on Wednesday night, losing 3-2 to Burnley. The loss sees the Clarets go one points behind Everton, both having played 29. Leeds are five ahead of Everton, played 31.

But there are two things that will be of real concern. Lampard has not turned around the form – which reads 17 losses in 22 Premier League games. Lampard has seven defeats in nine Premier League matches.

The other concern for Everton is their run of fixtures, a really difficult-looking list including Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea in the next three. Burt says sources have suggested Lampard could go.

“I think there will be another twist in the tale with Everton, I’m not sure Lampard will survive,” Burt said. “I know how Farhas Moshiri operates and knowing him, he might just pull out one more twist and get rid of him.

“We’re trying to stay up, put Duncan Ferguson in here. I was told that it was really bad after last night, it has calmed down today [Thursday]. A couple of messages I’ve had say it’s not unlikely that Moshiri might do it again.”

Burt on Lampard: Could Moshiri sack Everton boss before summer?

Lampard has not been able to change the ill-feeling at Everton. While the blame firmly lies with recruitment and the under-performing players. The Everton boss is not being able to get the best out of his stars.

Defeat to Manchester United this weekend would see Everton lose more ground – with Leeds taking on Watford and Norwich facing Burnley. Whatever the result, at least two of those four teams will pick up points.

Moshiri needs a defensive rearguard, a fire fighter. Perhaps, the passion and aggression, and fan favourite nature of Ferguson might be what Everton need. But Lampard is well-liked by fans despite the form.
