Marco Silva’s Everton reportedly tried and failed to bring Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart to the Premier League in the January transfer window.

Before Everton fans get too excited about the potential arrival of Lyon star and France U21 captain Lucas Tousart, they should cast their minds back to January.

Six months ago, it seemed as if Idrissa Gana Gueye was certain to leave Goodison Park for PSG and, in Tousart, The Toffees thought they’d found the Senegal star’s replacement.

But, according to France Football, the 22-year-old refused to consider leaving Lyon for Everton and turned down the chance to join compatriot Kurt Zouma on Merseyside. Fortunately, Gueye stayed where he was too, so Tousart’s snub wasn’t too much of an issue in the end.

According to Le Quotidian Du Foot, however, Everton have now made contact with the tigerish midfielder again in the hope that, just half a year after turning them down, he will now have second thoughts about the prospect of continuing his development under Marco Silva.

Tousart, according to Calciomercato, could cost somewhere in the region of £30 million.

But how on earth can Everton convince this long-time target to bite? With Lyon set to play Champions League football again next season, a Toffees side who missed out on European qualification altogether have a mountain to climb.

With Fabian Delph arriving from Manchester City earlier in the week and with Silva making it clear that he wants Gueye to stay for at least another season, why would Tousart swap a starring role in Lyon’s engine room to be a squad player at Goodison Park?

Maybe this is one transfer best left alone.
