Tottenham Hotspur were too good in the end for Newcastle United yesterday.
Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen spoke to reporters after his side’s hard fought win over Newcastle United yesterday, and admitted that they were lucky to leave St James’ Park with all three points, as quoted by the club’s official website.
Vertonghen, 31, played a key role for Mauricio Pochettino’s side during their win against the Magpies yesterday.
Not only did the Belgian score their first goal, but he also produced what turned out to be a match-winning block, and he told reporters after the game how he and his teammates might have been a bit lucky to take all three points back to north London, as quoted by the club’s official website:
“Yeh, you go a bit blind and you hope for some contact and I had it. I thought ok, and then everything was in slow motion. It hit the bar, and it fell the right way for us, so in the end, we were a bit lucky. They had some good chances, but we were sharp and responded well.”
Tottenham failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window, and many will feel as though yesterday’s victory only served to paper over the cracks, and Pochettino’s men will face much sterner tests between now and the end of the season.
The north London outfit have at least kept all of their best players, however, and with players like Vertonghen amongst their ranks, they just might shock a few people this season.
