The Spurs defender believes his side have improved despite the opening-day draw with Everton.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has told the London Evening Standard that he believes the side have improved upon last season and can challenge for the Premier League title again.
Spurs enjoyed their best season in recent memory last term, emerging as Leicester City’s only real rivals for the title in the latter portion of the season before ultimately suffering the frustration of dropping to third behind arch-rivals Arsenal on the final day of the season.
In the summer transfer window so far Mauricio Pochettino has seen the need to add just two players to his first-team squad in the form of his former midfielder at Southampton Victor Wanyama and Dutch striker Vincent Janssen.
Both of those players looked very astute additions in pre-season, and Spurs were much-improved after Janssen came on as a second-half substitute in the 1-1 draw with Everton on Saturday.
Despite only managing a draw to start the campaign, Vertonghen is confident that the added quality given by the two new arrivals, as well as the increased experience and wisdom gained from last season, stands the club in good stead in their hunt to challenge for the title again.
The Belgium international told the Standard: “We learned a lot from last season. We are physically stronger and everyone is a year older.
“We were a young team so that is good for us. We have made two good signings [Wanyama and Janssen] to help the team.
“We are stronger than last season so I think we can [challenge again this time].”
Vertonghen was fit enough to start at centre-back despite suffering an injury two months ago which had looked set to rule him out for the start of the season.
Spurs will be hoping to get their home campaign off to a perfect start with a win over fellow London side Crystal Palace next Saturday.
