Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has told the club’s official website that his teammate Son Heung-min always wants to be the best player on the pitch.

Vertonghen made the comments following Tottenham’s victory over Sunderland at White Hart Lane at the weekend.

Son, who joined Spurs from German club Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2015, was arguably the North London outfit’s best player in the Premier League game on Sunday evening.

The South Korea international winger took seven shots and created five chances against the Black Cats.

Belgium international defender Vertonghen has praised Son and has highlighted the ambition of the 24-year-old whenever he takes to the pitch.

“For me he was Man of the Match,” Vertonghen told Tottenham’s official website about Son. “Sonny is a great player and an even better person – he’s someone who always works hard, wants to play well and wants to be the best guy on the pitch.

“There’s almost no-one who deserves it more than him so everyone in the dressing room is very happy for him.”

Son is a very talented and promising winger, and he could prove to be a key player for Tottenham as the season progresses.

The 24-year-old is not guaranteed a place in the Spurs starting lineup at the moment, but if he continues to play like he did against Sunderland, then he will certainly make himself indispensable to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Tottenham are third in the Premier League table at the moment with 11 points from five matches, just four points behind leaders Manchester City.
