Tottenham Hotspur beat Pep Guardiola’s side on the weekend.

Jan Vertonghen has told Tottenham Hotspur’s official website that it would be disrespectful for Spurs’ team on the whole if the defenders courted more praise than other players for Sunday’s 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Tottenham flashed their Premier League title credentials with a relatively comfortable win over Pep Guardiola’s side at the weekend.

An own goal from Aleksandar Kolarov, coupled with another from Dele Alli, helped the North Londoners into a 2-0 half-time lead at White Hart Lane.

Erik Lamela also missed the chance to add a third from the penalty spot, but it would not come back to haunt Tottenham on a day where Mauricio Pochettino’s defence was superb

By virtue of the fact that City had won all six Premier League games before then, scoring 18 goals along the way, there was a pre-match spotlight shining on Spurs’ back four, and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, ahead of kickoff.

But although the Lilywhites dealt with the Sky Blues’ forward line, Vertonghen feels it would be unfair to single out the defensive element for special praise.

“I thought we were very good as a team. I think it would be a bit disrespectful to say that it was just because of the back four and Hugo that we defended well,” he told Tottenham’s website.

“The guys did so much work for us and that makes it easier for us.”
