Jan Vertonghen needed just one word to sum up his afternoon on Twitter as he scored for Tottenham for the first time since October 2013 as Mauricio Pochettino’s men booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Pochettino made a number of changes for the game against Wimbledon at Wembley, but still put out a very strong team against the League One side, with Vertonghen, Mousa Dembele and Harry Kane all featuring.
But it took a while for Spurs to break their opponents down and they were given a scare during the first-half as the away side hit the bar after a great save from Michel Vorm.
Tottenham made sure there would be no upset in the second-half however, as Harry Kane scored twice before Vertonghen found the back of the net with a deflected long-range effort to leave Spurs 3-0 up just eight minutes after the deadlock had been broken.
Spurs have now won four of their last five, while they have still not lost a home game since October as they booked their place in the fourth round of the competition and avoided an upset.
And after the game, Vertonghen – whose last goal for Tottenham came in the 2-0 Europa League win over Sheriff when Andre Villas-Boas was manager – took to social media to comment on finally ending that wait for a goal.
