Davinson Sanchez joined Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window in a club-record deal.

Jan Vertonghen has told Tottenham’s official matchday programme in quotes that have been reported by the club’s official website that people he has spoken to about Spurs summer signing Davinson Sanchez all rate the defender very highly.

According to a report from BBC Sport from towards the end of the transfer window, Sanchez was signed for a club record £42 million, with the 21-year-old signing a six-year deal with Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

But despite his lack of experience – Sanchez had made just 45 appearances for Ajax in all competitions before earning his move to the Premier League – Vertonghen is more than confident that his new teammate will prove to be a very astute signing for Tottenham.

“I know people who know him and they are all very positive, they rate him very highly,” he told the club’s official matchday programme in quotes reported by their official website.

“It’s always nice to have new players in the squad and we’re looking forward to seeing him training. It will mean more competition for places but that’s what football is all about.

“Obviously he’s coming from Ajax so we have something in common, along with Christian (Eriksen) and Toby (Alderweireld) who also played for them in the past.”

Although Sanchez has not played a considerable number of matches during his career, he has certainly shown that he has the potential to become a player who justifies moving for such a significant fee in the future.

The Colombia international was Ajax’s player of the season last term, and that came in a campaign when he helped the side reach the final of the Europa League.

And Spurs fans will be hoping, as Vertonghen alluded to, that he becomes the latest former Ajax ace to prove to be a major hit during his time with Tottenham.
