The Spurs defender has looked to change public perception of his teammate.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has told the club’s official website that Christian Eriksen, who has come in for some criticism from supporters this season, is actually one of the hardest-working players at the club.
Eriksen has been a leading star for Spurs since his arrival from Ajax in 2013, but this season has occasionally been the target of frustration from fans over his perceived low work-rate.
Part of the problem has been that he has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane in the summer and in January, something which some supporters appear to feel has impacted his performances.
However, he has redoubled his efforts in recent weeks, and his brace against Hull City on Wednesday night means that he has now netted five times in his last five games.
His latest two strikes took his tally for the season to seven goals and five assists in 21 appearances in all competitions, and he may well have played his way back into supporters’ good books.
Vertonghen certainly believes that should be the case, and he refuted any suggestion that Eriksen could be lazy or workshy.
Speaking to the Spurs website, the defender said: “He is one of the hardest workers I know. He works hard on his set-pieces, he’s scoring goals and I think something like this [run of goalscoring form] is what he deserves.”
Eriksen will be hoping to continue his excellent recent form when Tottenham host Burnley on Sunday.
