Christian Eriksen is heavily linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur.
Jan Vertonghen has told Sky Sports that he hopes the ‘exceptional’ Christian Eriksen is still at Tottenham Hotspur next season.
Eriksen plunged his Tottenham future into doubt earlier this month by admitting that he wanted a change of scenery after six years in North London.
According to The Independent, Real Madrid have made the Spurs attacker a priority signing over Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.
The Denmark international has been one of the Lilywhites’ best and most consistent midfielders since Luka Modric quit the club in 2012.
And Vertonghen, who has known the Dane since their Ajax days, is desperate to see Tottenham keep his team-mate at the club beyond this summer.
He told Sky Sports: “Obviously when the transfer window starts there are a lot rumours, but there were rumours last year and everyone stayed together, so I’m hopeful.
“Christian is a great player. I have known him since he was 16, played with him since he was 16 or 17 [at Ajax] and I hope he’s with Tottenham next season. He’s an exceptional player.”
The fact that Eriksen is only contracted to the club until next summer doesn’t put chairman Daniel Levy in a position of huge power, but he will ensure that Tottenham get a good deal for the 27-year-old no matter what happens.
