The Belgian defender performed well in a back-three with his Tottenham team-mate Toby Alderweireld.

Belgium won their World Cup qualifier against Bosnia last night in comfortable fashion. They ended up 4-0 winners, but only after they had to change their formation early on.
Lazio left-back Jordan Lukaku had to be taken off early on with an ankle injury and Belgian coach Roberto Martinez went back to his Wigan Athletic days – switching to three at the back.
It was a move that certainly paid off and two Tottenham players thrived as part of a back three. Both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld played well in a back three and it certainly suited their game.

Vertonghen even spoke of his happiness to play in the system.
He told 7sur7:
“We worked this system during the week. And it worked well on both the offensive and defensive.
“Thanks to this system we could exert greater pressure. Obviously this system suits us well. “
It certainly worked for Belgium, but is it a formation that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino should consider as a plan B?
Spurs could easily make a back three work for them.

Danny Rose and Kyle Walker could easily play the wing-back roles and Eric Dier could happily switch into the back three.
If for whatever reason Spurs find themselves needing to change things up there is no doubt his players have the ability to slot into all manner of different formations asked of them.
