Vertonghen has entered the final 12 months of his Tottenham contract.

Jan Vertonghen has been quoted by Belgian outlet HLN that he expects current club Tottenham Hotspur to activate a clause in his current contract that will see him extend his current deal by another 12 months.
The 31-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Spurs despite starring for the north Londoners last season, in what was arguably his best season since joining Mauricio Pochettino’s side in 2012 from Ajax.
Vertonghen has linked up with the Belgium squad as they prepare to face Scotland on Friday evening at Hampden Park, teaming up with Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld.
The left-footed defender claimed that he expects Tottenham to activate the extension clause in his current deal which will see his contract expire in the summer of 2020. He also stated that he is listening to his body in order to continue at the highest level.
“My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens,” Vertonghen said.
“I am working on my body so that I am not forced to make choices about my future. When I see what I did at Ajax in my early years and what is being done twelve years later, the difference is immense.”

Vertonghen, capped 108 times by Belgium, has played every single minute of Tottenham’s four opening Premier League matches, which have seen them earn wins over Newcastle, Fulham and Manchester United, but also a loss to Watford.
The defender is in a similar boat to both of his Belgium teammates at Spurs in terms of his contract, with Dembele and Alderweireld also entering the final 12 months of their current deals.
Under the bosman ruling, all three players will be allowed to talk to non-English clubs in January over a pre-contract agreement that would see the players leave at the end of the season.
If Spurs want to avoid such an occurrence, they must extend the deals of the trio immediately.
