Jan Vertonghen sings the praises of Tottenham Hotspur teammate Ben Davies.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has backed teammate Ben Davies to establish himself as a regular at left-back.
Wales international Davies joined Spurs from fellow Premier League club Swansea City in the summer transfer window, but he has been largely a fringe player so far.
Davies has played just 18 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, with Danny Rose being manager Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice left-back at the moment.
However, Vertonghen believes that the 21-year-old can displace Rose and is quoted as saying by The Daily Mail: “I played some games with him on a Thursday.
“Of course you want to play in the Premier League and he’s a very good player. He’s doing very well. But Danny Rose is one of the best left-backs in the Premier League at the moment.
“Ben is 21 and has the time to improve. He’s a very good left-back and he can be number one left-back at Spurs one day. 100 per cent that day will come. He has the qualities.”
Davies enjoyed a strong season for Swansea in 2013-14, but he was always likely to find it tough breaking into the first team at Tottenham this campaign.
At 21, the Welshman has time on his hand and has a lot to improve. If Davies continues to train well, learn and remains patient, then his time will come sooner rather than later.
