Jan Vertonghen has returned back to Tottenham Hotspur’s starting XI after being left out during the very early stages of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that he was ‘disappointed’ with Mauricio Pochettino’s decision not to select him during the very early part of the new season.
Centre-back Vertonghen has been a regular at the club for a number of years now, but for the first three games of this Premier League campaign, he was either out of the matchday squad altogether or put on the bench.
He wasn’t the only one not selected at the time, with Christian Eriksen also being in and out of the starting XI, before the duo returned during that North London derby clash.
Vertonghen has played at the heart of Spurs’ defence ever since then, with Pochettino’s side producing a number of indifferent results and performances.
Nonetheless, ahead of Spurs’ Champions League clash against Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, Vertonghen was very honest in stating how he felt at not being selected by his manager.
“I didn’t play the first three games,” Vertonghen told Football London. “That’s a decision because we can only have 11 on the pitch and seven on the bench. I want to play every game and in that way, I was disappointed.
“I think that shows I am still ambitious and I want to play every game. My performances this season, a couple of good ones and a couple that could have been better. That’s why we train every day to reach a higher level.”
Spurs are yet to put together a good run of performances and results, and they will be hoping they will bring their A-game against the Bundesliga champions.
Bayern may not be the force they once were, but they will still test Spurs, who dropped valuable points against Greek side Olympiacos last time out.
Vertonghen started that match and he will more than likely feature again tonight as Pochettino will be hoping his players can get their first win on the board.
