Tottenham Hotspur will have to be on their best form against Manchester City on Wednesday night.
Tottenham ace Jan Vertonghen spoke to reporters ahead of his side’s trip to the Etihad to take on Manchester City in the Champions League on Wednesday night, and insisted that he and his teammates will not be sitting back and defending against Pep Guardiola’s side, as quoted by The Independent.
Spurs won the first-leg 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium last Tuesday, but they will still have their work cut-out, if they are to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.
City will surely come out of the blocks firing on all cylinders against Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Wednesday night, but one goal for the north London outfit would make the Premier League champions’ task extremely hard.
Tottenham will undoubtedly have to soak up spells of heavy pressure at the Etihad, but Vertonghen told reporters how his team are not approaching the game with a defensive mindset, as quoted by The Independent:
“We’re not a team that can sit back and play for the clean sheet [against City]. We’ll try to score ourselves. They know they have to go and attack. They have home advantage and know they have to score at least one to beat us. Hopefully that little cushion we have, we can take advantage of it.”
Whatever happens at the Etihad, Tottenham will have to be on their very best form, if they are to have any chance whatsoever of progressing through to the semi-finals.
They will have to ride their luck, but they have more than enough quality to trouble City too.
