The Premier League’s bottom club, Huddersfield Town, need to replace David Wagner and could turn to Borussia Dortmund’s U23 coach Siewert.
Back in 2015, Huddersfield Town made one of the best decisions in the club’s history when they hired David Wagner, a little-known coach who arrived in Yorkshire after a spell in charge of Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team.
Just two years later, Wagner led The Terriers to the Premier League for the first time in their history, a minor miracle that etched his name forever into the club’s folklore.
And, according to reports in Germany, Huddersfield are now set to repeat the trick, turning to Dortmund once again after Wagner ended his reign at the John Smith’s Stadium this week.
Sport Bild are claiming that Jan Siewert is the front-runner to take over at the Premier League’s bottom club with Huddersfield set to pay around £265,000 to buy out his contract with the BVB U23 team.
36-year-old Siewert has been in charge since 2017 and his side are currently fourth in the Regionalliga West table.
It remains to be seen whether he can follow in Wagner’s footsteps and perform miracles at Huddersfield, who are eight points from safety in England’s top flight.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that the former France defender Willy Sagnol was also under consideration. The 41-year-old, who played 58 times for his country, enjoyed a promising spell at Bordeaux between 2014 and 2016 and had one game in interim charge of Bayern Munich after the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti.
