Liverpool take on Manchester United on Monday night at Anfield, and there will be plenty of eyes on who will be starting in goal for the home side.
Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet on the bench before the match
Former Liverpool midfielder has told the Liverpool Echo that he would be amazed if Simon Mignolet were to return to the starting line-up for Monday night’s game against Manchester United.
Mignolet has sat out the last three games with Loris Karius making his first appearances for the club since signing from Mainz in the summer.
Liverpool’s Loris Karius
Molby told the Liverpool Echo: “Klopp faces a decision over who to play in goal, but I would be amazed if Simon Mignolet is recalled.
“What would be the point of giving Loris Karius a run in the side if you’re already thinking about bringing Mignolet back for a big game?
“Mind you, I can’t blame Mignolet for talking up his own chances. He’s clearly eager to play – and you can bet he’ll be ready.”
Liverpool’s Loris Karius (L) and Simon Mignolet warm up before the match
Liverpool have yet to keep a clean sheet in the Premier League this season, so whoever plays in goal on Monday night could be in for a busy evening.
Given that Karius has been introduced to the side prior to the international break, it would be something of a surprise if he’s omitted from the starting XI after just three games – and if it’s for the biggest game of the season then it can’t do much for the 23-year-old’s confidence.
Mignolet may have to continue to bide his time and possibly stake his claim for a more permanent return by the time their EFL Cup tie against Tottenham comes around in just under two weeks’ time.
