Jamie Sterry is on the fringes of Newcastle’s first team under Rafa Benitez.
Jamie Sterry has revealed that he could leave Newcastle United in the January transfer window on loan after failing to secure a temporary deal during the summer.
The 21-year-old has been fighting to recover from a long-term groin problem that he suffered towards the end of the 2016-17 campaign – an injury that blocked him from completing a summer move.
But now, Newcastle’s number 42 has claimed that he could move on in January but also stated that if there is a chance of first-team football at St. James’ Park then he will take it.
Speaking to the Shields Gazette, defender Sterry spoke of his frustration of not being able to earn a move elsewhere during the summer as well as his experiences from training with the first team.
“I wasn’t fit enough to get out on loan (before the summer transfer window closed), and I need to wait and see what happens in January,” said Sterry.
“I’d like to get more game time, but if the opportunity’s here at Newcastle, I’d like to take it. Game time anywhere will help me in the long run. I’m just itching to try and get back into squads. It’s great training with them. I’m learning a lot.”
Sterry spent the first half of the 2016-17 season on loan with Coventry City, where he impressed during 20 appearances in all competitions and even scored his first career goal against Morecambe.
Now with five first-team appearances under his belt at Newcastle, Sterry is hungry for more but could find himself joining a club in the Football League come January.
